On Wednesday, Elon Musk unceremoniously said goodbye to his short stint in D.C. at a Trump cabinet meeting. It was a far cry from wielding a chainsaw on the stage of CPAC! Musk was reduced to leaving D.C. with his tail between his legs, only to have the WSJ report the next day, that he was also on the brink of being replaced by the board of Tesla!
Wow, how the worm has turned for Icarus!
But the legacy of DOGE, and what it did and did not accomplish has only gotten worse from there.
You’ll recall that Musk promised on the stage of Madison Square Garden to shave “at least $2 trillion” of government waste in October 2024. That number was cut in half, to $1 trillion as Trump took office. And weeks later, we had Musk and Trump bragging about cutting “hundreds of billions” and a DOGE Dividend.
More recently, a humbled Musk had reduced his expectation to $150 billion of savings at one cabinet meeting, and then on Wednesday, when Trump said DOGE had “saved” $150 billion, Musk chimed in, “$160 billion, but who’s counting?”
